Something for the ladies: 'Ruby Tuesday'

Who doesn't love upcycling and saving the planet in a stylish way?..Exactly.  And show me a girl that doesn't love jewellery...and I'll show you a fibber...

That's why we are certain that you're going to enjoy meeting our friend Rebecca aka 'Ruby Tuesday' at the next event with her unique homewares and jewellery:

'I started making and selling jewellery just over a year ago. I’ve always loved jewellery, in fact in my year 10 year book my ‘most likely career’ was to own a jewellery shop!

I sell online but I love doing craft and vintage fairs where I get to a chance to see people reactions to my collection. I also have a unit in the Nichols Building in Sheffield where I display most of my larger items and furniture.

I started upcycling vintage homewares after seeing an article on the Guardian website.  Scouring carboots, charity shops and auctions is all part of the fun; I love anything pretty and shiny! I then use my finds to create unique and interesting pieces.

I’m currently at Sheffield Uni studying philosophy but when I finish next year my plan is to open my own shop in Sheffield.'

Find Ruby Tuesday at Leeds Corn Exchange on Sat Oct 6th - reetsweet is always free entry!

reetsweet's christmas at sheffield: previews

Did we mention we have our first event in Sheffield very soon? If you're new to reetsweet, we have a treat for you - reetsweet is no ordinary craft fair, we only select the very best original art, homewares, prints and accessories for you - all at free events. Join us at the Millenium Gallery from 12pm to 4pm next sunday - Nov 27th....Sheffield!

You will be able to meet Jonathan Wilkinson of We Live Here. We Live Here’s prints and products celebrate the buildings and scenes that define where we live. All illustration and design is created by We Live Here founder, Jonathan Wilkinson.

'Inspired by constructivist graphic design and the Bauhaus movement, We Live Here’s pared-down diagrammatical style aims to represent as much detail as is possible in just two or three colours. More recent works take the style in a new direction by attempting to create a more hyperreal image that sits somewhere between illustration and photography. "Above all I get a kick out of reimagining these unconventionally beautiful buildings in my own style. For me it gives the buildings a greater sense of importance and hopefully makes us think a little differently about them too."'

reetsweet's christmas at sheffield

This winter we are delighted at reetsweet to carry on the work of our friends at craft candy in sheffield and will be at the prestigious millenium gallery near the train station on sunday 27th of this month from 12pm to 4pm! For more details see our events page here.

Meanwhile, we have an incredible amount of ma
ker talent from the next fair to preview to you right here on the blog! We are very proud to introduce hayley wright of born restless...

'Born Restless is a collection of embroidered art and jewellery, made by someone who is trying to live a little better and work a little less. Currently living in Manchester, I make most of the things you’ll see here in my bedroom at night, whilst listening to ghost stories on the radio. I’m inspired by ideas of home and memory, the occult, my regular nightmares, as well as anything else that seems like a great idea at the time.'

We love her work - it's refreshing and modern and very quirky! Check back this week for more previews...

Thursday

jonathan lives here...

Jonathan Wilkinson aka We Live Here celebrates in his work the buildings and scenes from the places we see everyday. All of his illustrations are orginal, created from scratch. He studied fine art at the Psalter Lane Campus Sheffield Hallam where he developed his style and established We Live Here in 2007.

"Above all I get a kick out of reimagining these unconventionally beautiful buildings in my own style. For me it gives the buildings a greater sense of importance and hopefully makes us think a little differently about them too."

Jonathan has lived and worked in Sheffield for the last 11 years. While he was born in Leeds and grew up in Nottingham, Sheffield is his home. This will be his second appearance at reetsweet, he first visited us in Nov for our premier show!

Sunday

introducing Jonathan from 'we live here'...

31 year old Jonathan Wilkinson creates startling yet comforting images of cityscapes. Many feature iconic buildings from his home town of Sheffield but for reetsweet Jonathan is creating some special Leeds based pieces for the show! His stunning clean style, with a rich sense of detail are wonderful pieces for any home.

Jonathan has a strong portfolio of work he has been building since 2006 when he took his art full time and launched his website 'we live here'. See him this coming sunday 7th november at the Leeds Corn Exchange from 11am til 4pm....!

Friday

Oui Oui Elodie G!

Hi there all! I have been slacking off this week as I had a nasty bout of tonsilitus! But I'm back with a vengeance with two new peeps to introduce you to, beginning with the works of Elodie G... Tell us a bit about youself!!..

I started doing indie pop fanzines in the mid-90s when I lived in France. It was all about D.I.Y. at the time, not 'crafting'.

Some of my cartoonist friends started a fanzine, around the same time, in my city (Nice) and I joined in to write about music.

But it totally inspired me to start drawing my own cartoons!

I moved to England in 1997, on the day of Lady Di's funeral (and the pilot asked for a minute silence on the plane... So it's stuck in my mind forever).

I had a few years of Indie pop madness living with the legendary Shaun Alcock from The Real Losers and even shared a house with Mr James Green.

I started a band, joined another, did lots of fanzines, started making bags that I sold at gigs... I even met Daniel Johnston and Jad Fair slept in my bed!

One fine day, I moved to Sheffield, got married, started a comic called 'Chop chop' which was an anthology of people I knew in Sheffield who drew comics.

Another fine day, I gave birth to teeny twin girls and got the sewing machine out again and slowly got back into sewing and making little handmade comics again!

I get inspired by everyday things that make me smile, laugh or sometimes totally annoy me!

Mr James Green and I decided to start doing craft fair this year. We are thoroughly enjoying it and I am very much looking forward to Reet Sweet as I lived in Leeds for 5 years!

Elodie G will be appearing at reetsweet on Nov 7th at the leeds corn exchange selling her fantastic zines, prints and doodles...I can't wait!

Saturday

Who is James Green?...

Reetsweet would like you to meet James Green, one our latest additions...

'I live in Sheffield with my wife and young son.

I create artwork using linocuts and copper-plate etchings. I am drawn
towards simple graphic images, landscapes, animals, people and occasionally the ordinarily absurd. However you probably won't see any unicorns in my work.

Influences are people like cartoonist Chris Ware,
artists Stanley Spencer, Max Beckmann and Francisco Goya, and film- makers Werner Herzog, Jan Svankmajer and Mike Leigh. I have been creating printed artwork for probably the last 7 years (although i've only recently been trying to sell them), and also occasionally produce artwork for record sleeves too. I studied fine-art at university, but these days probably see myself more as a crafts-person than an artist.

I've had one of my pieces ('Paris Buggy') shortlisted for the 2007 'International Small Print Exhibition', and was commissioned in 2008 by Paul Smith Menswear to design images for a range of t-shirts for sale in their Japanese stores. I'm a member of Sheffield craft-collective Craft Candy, and I sell mywork at various fairs/markets and also via my Folksy shop. I also am a musician and have a band called 'The Big Eyes Family Players' '
