April Event New Maker: Charming illustration work by Ed Boxall

We all need a little bit of magic in our lives, and we have a new maker for April who specialises in just that; meet Ed Boxall...

'Ed Boxall is an artist, writer and printmaker.  In Ed’s work, warm, earthy images of family life mix with magic and myth.

Many of his handmade prints capture moments from life: children’s encounters with animals, walking on the beach, eating porridge and peas. Other images have a more ambiguous poetry: people light fires in sea shells and drift on empty seas'

'His ‘Pearbox Books’ explore this world including ‘The Rooftop Garden’, and his popular ‘Storm Tree Stories’.

“The Books have... an almost spiritual sense of connection between people and places and the natural world” (Katriona Chapman)

Ed performs his stories with his own ‘magic lantern’ style projections and giant pop-up paper   cut out silhouettes, illuminated with fairy lights.

“Beautifully, wonderfully, inspiringly tingle-making” (feedback from a story telling session)

Ed graduated from St Martin’s College in 1999. He had several books published by Walker books before independently establishing his practice.'

october fair preview: rhys hale

Another new reetsweeter to proudly introduce to you is R
hys Hale - a Yorkshire-born digital illustrator, who sells contemporary art-prints, cards, badges and stickers...

'Having limited resources while travelling the world the last few years, he is firing on all cylinders to get his own studio and establish himself as a bright new local artist. His partner in craftiness is Juliette Daum, a girl so adept with a sewing machine that to paraphrase Peggy Lee, she could make a dress out of a feed bag. A hatter and bag lady extraordinaire who
likes to use natural fabrics and also material from recycled clothes...They've rocked craft markets in the US, Germany, France and England, and have recently settled in Yorkshire to spread their arty brand of love.'

... and now they are going to be joining us on Oct 1st and 2nd (next weekend guys!) at Leeds' Corn Exchange for reetsweet's autumn fair...!

Monday

the rise and rise of another reetsweeter! : matt saunders

I was a total stalker of matt saunder's work before I booked him for reetsweet, I am not afraid to admit it! His work caught my eye on etsy, and then at a lovely event up at the brudenell social club put on by my friend amy (aka amy panda - see her work here!) and then I would look at his website and get all dreamy! Matt, a Leeds graduate has been incredibly busy these past few months, not only has he done work in the past for belle & sebastian and channel 4, but he has just recently been commissioned by none other than CATH KIDSTON to do illustrations for their magazine, and they also interviewed him! Get in!

Matt has recently been designing some stunning prints that are just amazing - delicate, wistful and childlike (see top) - we love! They remind me of wallpaper I once had in the 80's! We wish Matt and all our fantastic reetsweet artists well for their future and may you have lots more success!

Jil made these...how cute are they!?

'Jil made this' is simply all made by Jil... Jil has grown up making, and after a degree in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design at Leeds College of Art and lots of experience under her belt, she decided to set up her own range of quirky, illustrative and innovative crafted items.
They are all hand drawn from Jil's imagination, hand printed and hand stitched together, with items ranging from tote bags and Handmade cards, to Plush horses and old lady badges! Her work is fun and aimed at all ages. She is inspired by everyday mundane things and memories from childhood. She hoards, she clutters and she creates and loves toys, cats, illustrations, Rob Ryan and nostalgia.

Each item is unique and made with lots of love and care! Jil has sold illustrated fashion fabrics in paris and whilst now managing a T Shirt print shop in Leeds, she's available for commissions and is looking forward to expanding!
See her at reetsweet next sunday! x

I've always loved velvet...

Reetsweet is proud to introduce yet another fine stallholder for the event at The Corn Exchange on Nov 7th...'Velvet Noir' aka designer Jeweller Luke Anthony has been crafting fine luxurious jewellery in Hatton Garden, London for the past seven years. Frustrated at the absence of quality found in today’s accessory jewellery, he conceived Velvet Noir - a collection of affordable, unique and modern jewellery per diem. Fusing meticulous design with dedicated craftsmanship, Luke Anthony has created a fresh and original range of handcrafted accessory jewellery. Taking it's inspiration from symbols, nature and imagination the Velvet Noir collection is the ultimate, individual style statement for the modern woman...

Velvet Noir will be making its first visit to Leeds at the Corn Exchange on November 7th and to celebrate this will be introducing some new and exciting additions to the collection... including ‘love is in the air’ themed pendants and rings, lightning – star – feather drop earrings and floral pendants inspired by the wonderful British countryside...

Wednesday

old friends...introducing lolo holmes!

A very long time ago in a shop far far away I used to sell all manner of fantastic skater girl and japanese clothes and Lolo aka Lolo Holmes Photography & Jewellery was one of my customers. All grown up, with ace style and the most beautiful tattoos Lolo is making an appearance at reetsweet...

'My true love is experimental film photograhy but I've recently branched out into re-purposing antique items into necklaces and brooches. I also love taxidermy and bones and this is slowly working its way into my work too. I've got some exciting new things planned for Reetsweet'

Reetsweet is at the Corn Exchange on Nov 7th from 11am to 4pm...
